What Tempo optimizes
Public materials frame Tempo as a payments-first L1 for stablecoins at scale: high throughput, fast finality, very low fees, and a preference for paying fees in major stablecoins so users avoid “buy the gas token first.” Launch materials name design input from large fintech and commerce firms (for example Visa, Shopify, Revolut). Tempo is described as an independent company with Stripe and Paradigm as incubators and early investors — not a Stripe-issued meme asset.
There is also an agent angle: machine payment protocols so software can pay software without a full human wallet ceremony. That sits next to Stripe’s broader crypto stack (ramps, embedded wallets, and eventually network enums that can include Tempo).
What Solana optimizes
Solana is a general-purpose high-throughput L1. Payments are one workload among many: DEXes, consumer apps, LSTs, RWAs, agents, and internet capital markets share the same metal. Overlap and divergence
Both want stablecoins as default money, fast finality for real UX, agentic payments, and less bridge theater for end users. Collision is healthy: merchants may settle on Tempo while users still hold and trade on Solana. Issuers and bridges decide how painful that hop is.
Tempo wins if Stripe’s rails make “pay in USDC” as boring as “pay by card.” Solana wins if open markets and consumer apps keep demand for dollars and everything else on one chain.
